[Asterisk-bsd] startup error -how to trace

At startup this error is printed to the CLI:

 #asterisk -vvvvgc
  == Parsing '/usr/local/etc/asterisk.conf': Not found (No such file
or directory)

The paths in asterisk.conf appear to be correct, what approach
could be taken to trace the origin of the error?
