re: callerid naming services

my take is you want to allow an entry point for those who would like to
start using the service but do not currently offer a product to their
customers. allowing a ramp up time for integration would provide a
smaller company to integrate that service into their product offering.
the charge/lookup model would work because volume is low during
integration. the tiered pricing approach would come into play for
volume users as described earlier.

I think you should offer both as in the long range, you hook (so to
speak) clients into your service with the no contract and get them up
and running quickly w/o commitment, then you keep them by always
reminding them (in emails, on your website) that you are willing to
negociate volume discounts based on volume of calls or a fix
rate/month. you have effectively handled the objections to put the
initial effort into trying the service and the objections of continuing
to subscribe to your service. it is a win-win proposition for them.
you do not need a contract for low volume, you don't know if they will
even get the project completed. someone who has developed and
integrated your service, you can see their volume and price it
accordingly as also discussed earlier, according to the cost of service
+ reasonable profit. again win-win

as for caching - if you can't stop it - allow it (as per any gov't or
legal requirements). also, you can make your pricing such that caching
is not so cost effective as in a fixed rate/month on volume deals...
why would I put the extra effort into caching if the cost doesn't
justify it???

hope that helps

With the apparent demise of <a

I have decided to start a similar service. We depended on got-name
quite
heavily and
I've been frustrated at every turn trying to get in touch with them,
and they
still have a good portion of my prepaid cash. :-(
After a ton of investigation I cannot find an alternative, at least one
that
does not have a huge signup fee or large monthly
minimums. So I've decided to start a service of my own, primarily to
satisfy
our internal needs, but also to provide a low cost, low
volume, no commitment service to small users. I'm proposing .04 per
dip,
prepaid accounts - but with small increments like $5, no
signup fee, no contracts. The interface will be exactly like the
got-name interface. If you would be interested in this service,
please email me at TVaught at ColeTechnical dot com. The amount of
interest
will pretty much determine the speed at which I roll
this service out. I already have it running internally and I've
registered a
domain name for the service, www.callerid.name
, but
there is no web site up yet.
