The astdb is simply a way for Asterisk to retain information beyond the
context of individual calls.
An example would be to close up your shop early. You'd only want the closed
ivr tree to play for the rest of the day and then follow the regular logic
the next. You could accomplish this with dialplan logic coupled with cron
and the astdb.
