I've just finished reading the DUNDi Internet Draft, and I've a few
comments:
- Overall, I like it :) Lightweight, easy to implement - it's the way
the Internet used to be before it was run by committees.
- I think 6 bytes is too small for the ID. I'm thinking of a situation
where a single host might need to run multiple DUNDi servers. With only
one MAC address, there is no way to disambiguate them.
- There is no mention of whether TCP or UDP is the preferred transport.
And I presume it is intended to run DUNDi over TLS if secure operation is
needed
- I'd like to see a sentence specifying the "well-known" TCP/UDP port(s)
for the DUNDi protocol. Obviously this will be a placeholder until you
receive a final port allocation from IANA.
- I was unable to find any way for a DUNDi server to "deflect" a request
to another DUNDi entity. This would be very useful when implementing a
clearing house that may hold canonical entries for many numbers, but
needs to deflect requests for some numbers to other servers. Yes, the
server can perform the request itself on behalf of the requestor, but
this can lead to scaling problems when a server may have to proxy large
numbers of requests
- A mechanism that allows an entity to auto-discover DUNDi servers on a
local network would be useful in avoiding a priori configuration.
Here are some assorted minor errors:
- 5.7: says "The VERSION information element is used to indicate time to
live and always exactly two octets of data." I think this is a cut and
paste error.
- 5.7 has spelling error"communicats"
- 5.16 refers to cause code. Another cut and paste error
- 5.18 missing space in "fora"
- 5.24 says "should DUNDi be moved to IPv4 or other addressing schemes."
Perhaps you mean IPv6 ?
More to follow, and keep up the good work
Craig
