Most "fire deaths" are smoke inhalation. The whole city would be experiencing winds of smoke tearing through things and the basement shelters weren't well-sealed, even if the collapsing building didn't kill them they'd fill with smoke rapidly.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=msonormal1><span lang=EN-US><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=msonormal1><span lang=EN-US><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=msonormal1><span lang=EN-US>So yeah the air went bad, but it didn't get "sucked out" per se. The whole city was smoke and the smoke got in.
