I think it could be a good idea to use a non-proprietary format for storing videos, and mp4 seems to be a good candidate for the container (as it also holds rtp + custom payload for streaming).
But, I don't know much about video in asterisk so I don't know which implications would it have on the rest of the code how much work would it need to be done.
