I've been using telephone cards for 4-5 years and now I'm considering<br>
the Patton gateways. What are the pro and cons of Patton stuff compared<br>
to internal cards in a production system? Someone say external gateway<br>
are better because has no echo but have a longer delay when placing calls.<br>
Any suggestion appreciated.</blockquote><div><br>I would be cautious regarding echo performance, as enhanced echo cancelling software are now available on some telephony cards (HPEC, OSLEC, ...) and I can't see at the moment (experience will tell) why Patton gateways would perform any better or worse than telephony cards. I would be very curious to read other testimonies on that.<br>
<br>On another topic, I would say those gateway are not so easy to configure :<br>- a web server is embeded but it is not documented anywhere and it's GUI is far from natural,<br>- alternatively, you can edit a config file for which a huge doc is available but, as this boxes are not specifically designed to work with Asterisk, doc is not easy to understand (it took me 3 days to find how to register a gateway to an Asterisk server).<br>
<br>Anyway, configuring ISDN ports is easy and the range of possibilities is larger than with telephony cards :<br>- BRI/PRI, TE/NT, PtP/PtmP : every case is supported (BRI/NT/PtmP is not in latest libpri, for instance)<br>
- routing seems very powerful.<br><br><br>In the long run, I would preferably use telephony cards (or products) manufactered by companies directly contributing to Asterisk source code development (Digium, Xorcom, ...), and build telephony gateways with Asterisk, those telephony cards and off-the-shelf components, but I'm not sure conditions are met to do it now.<br>
