People make it overly complicated.

Things which provide dialtone are plugged into FXO ports.
    Phone lines
    PBX analog extensions

Things which expect to be provided with dialtone are plugged into FXS ports.
    Analog Phones
    Fax Machines

FXO ports can handle the 90 volt ring singnal
FXS ports often get destroyed by a 90 volt ring signal
