That was it: pkg-config was not installed.
I've been compiling Asterisk from source for years without installing
pkg-config !!


May I add that alternatively installing libpjproject-dev from
Wheezy-backports (with pkg-config) also allowed me to get PJSIP
available in Asterisk, according menuselect output.
