OK, then I think I know what is going on here. Our JIRA installation is 
used by the general public (since last weekend), but also Digium's 
employees and customers for various projects. In order to provide secure 
connections for some users, the JIRA server is configured to request an 
SSL client certificate from the browser (although this is optional). If 
the client provides a certificate, then it gets validated and the 
appropriate permissions granted to the user.

What is probably happening here is that Safari does not handle the 
'optional' client certificate request from the server properly.
