[asterisk-users] Debugging log rotation problem

I see the following: a stuck process

12651 ?        S      0:00 gzip -9 /var/log/asterisk/messages.2

and then:

asterisk*CLI> core show channels
Channel              Location             State   Application(Data)             
Logger/rotate        s at default:1          Down    (None)                        
1 active channel
0 active calls

This happens quite regularly.  How do I debug the cause?
