Somewhat of a religious argument.
CentOS 5.5 is current, and does work well.
You will also find the Debian/Ubuntu camp on the list

Use what you know.
If you don't know either, use CentOS. 32 it is fine for asterisk
Compile from source

Using the above, your Google searches for help will be the most productive
