At this point I'll just point you to a backport I once made of the then
trunk app_fax.c for 1.4.

There are several files of interest there:

* app_fax.c - The copy I worked with
* debian/patches/app_fax_14 - the backport
* debian/rules - to see how to build it (as an external module)

Shouldn't be difficult to update this to the current version of
app_fax.c, but I haven't had the time.
