What version of Ubuntu? (and thus: what version of Asterisk)

cat /etc/ubuntu_version # or something similar
dpkg -l asterisk

Is asterisk running?

  ps aux | grep asterisk

If it isn't: what do you see in /var/log/asterisk/messages
