Looks like _I'm_ the one that needs to read the documentation.  I
thought you could pick up a ringing Zaptel channel.  But, I couldn't
get it to work on my 1.4.2 system.

I could pick up the Sip device that was told to ring when the Zap
channel rings, but I  could not pick up the Zap channel itself.  I'm
guessing that would be the same problem with your IAX as well.  Both
are acting as trunks, not endpoints, and you can only pick up
endpoints.
