One advantage of LGPL over GPL is that GPL is 'viral' whereas LGPL is not.  For a more in depth discussion please see:

In short, if you want anyone to be able to distribute your software within their own packages, even proprietary and/or commercial ones, then use the LGPL.  If you want your software to follow the tenets of 'free and open source' more strictly, then use the GPL.  Both licenses protect your software, but they place different limits on how the software is distributed.
