Ouch!
NFS is great in a well regulated stable LAN with low latency and a  
high read/write
ratio. Take away any of those factors and it rapidly turns into a  
nightmare.

If I were starting a project now, I'd
take a look at the (newish) support for IMAP storage for voicemail.
