   Some aspects of the limit on concurrent file descriptors are still on 
the kernel side, unfortunately, depending on what you're doing with them.
For instance, if any kind of asynchronous polling of descriptors is done
with select(), know that FD_SETSIZE is hard-coded into the kernel headers.

   If it's a simple issue of open files, there should be no problem 
increasing it on the ulimit side.  But more complex operations involving
concurrent use of descriptors and sockets may require changes to hard-coded 
parameters.
