Try this:

   # strings -a /usr/sbin/asterisk | grep Digium

I get:

   Asterisk 1.2.16, Copyright (C) 1999 - 2005, Digium, Inc. and others.
   Asterisk 1.2.16, Copyright (C) 1999 - 2006 Digium, Inc. and others.

but if the version string has been removed from the sources, it's anyones 
guess...
