The various flavors of openWRT that used compressed file systems to save 
space can't do the (de)compression fast enough to maintain an audio stream.

There are several ways to work around it: use one of the models that has 
USB, or architect the VM so that it resides, at least temporarily, on 
the ramdisk.

Or ship it off to a remote Asterisk instance with more horsepower.
