The 601 has a better, higher-resolution screen.  While that may not be
particularly important to some it certainly was to us.  Plus, those
extra "line" keys need not necessarily be used for additional line
appearances/registrations.  They are also used for the speeddial
assignment.

Plus, the 601 can use the expansion module.  It was nice that our
"attendant console" was the same phone as everyone else so that if we
had a failure it was easy to swap since it was not unique.  Of course,
we also required an 802.3af-compliant phone which obviously steers us
toward the 601.

What are the advantages of the 601 over the 501?  I do not have PoE here
(at least not yet) and do not need the additional lines (except maybe on
the attendant's console).

Is the 601 better than the 501 or does it just have the ability to
handle more lines?
