Do you know what signalling your telco is giving to you?  I only 
have hints from your Cisco excerpt, namely CAS and R2.

What is in your zapata.conf for this link?  Particularly the
switchtype and signalling entries.  Maybe these are incorrect?
Possibly asterisk is expecting some common channel signalling (CCS)
but that the far end is using channel associated signalling (CAS),
and this is giving you the protocol error and closing the call.

I can't be of too much more help.  I have used CAS signalling with
Asterisk, but only to channel banks, and nothing more complex like
a live Telco line.
