Yes, We do that on that way.
But doesn't mean that you cannot split the PRI on one box, and do the ipbx
on the other one. Actually, we 're splitting our infrastructure on that
direction in order to backup & get redundancy on pri's, ipbx, and other
funcionallity boxes.

You donot need multiple asterisk boxes for a single t1. A single p4
box should be helpful, you can use digiums te110p pci card for a
single pri line into the box. The same box could also be on another
network dealing with SIP.
