[Asterisk-Users] mpg123 alternative?

I'd suggest using the format_mp3 program that's included in 
asterisk-addons.  We switched to that after mpg123 wouldn't compile on 
our newer 64bit machines, and it works like a charm, and you don't have 
to change anything.
