I agree, but.. I have recently installed debian with an em64t kernel
(it was a Xeon 3.0), the thing we noticed was that booting with the
em64t was much faster then with the 386 kernel.. (a difference of 10
seconds if I remember correctly!)

Comparing the 'speed/performance' of the software running on it (a
mailserver) was not part of our little test, so no idea on that..
