Thanks Kevin, your explanation resonated better with me.  Sorry for
doubting you Eric ;-)

So the answer is to add another extension:
exten => _NXXXXXX,1,Dial(Zap/1/${EXTEN})
exten => _NXXXXXXXXX,1,<do something else>
