It bloats the size of the mails, slowing down their delivery to the 
thousands of members on the list, wasting precious system resources at 
every single step in the chain.

HTML mail, particularly that generated by Our Favorite Monopolist, 
renders horribly on many other mail readers, thereby making the mail not 
only wasteful of resources but useless to the reader.

It doesn't lend itself to easy captioning in replies, and often leads to 
the reply being forced to html too, compounding the evil.

That's for starters.  I'm sure others will chime in with other evils 
beyond these.

I'm with the group that just deletes them.  It's anti-social behavior to 
send them, and the practice should be discouraged with a vengence.
