Finally with a lot of work on the part of Steve we seem to have got to
the bottom of this.

I use Mandrake 10.1/Cooker this definitely has an unpatched version of
libtiff 3.6.1. When I removed Mandrake's version and installed a vanilla
version I got the same problems, then I patched as from

The garbage has gone, I get correctly constructed images.

Perhaps other distributions have also 'forgotten' this patch.
