Nextel does have snpp and dial up access to it.  You can use qpage to send
messages via a modem as an alternative.  I think they may also have an snpp
gateway that qpage can use, I just never looked into it as I needed a method
to send messages without using the Internet.

I have used their email gateway for sending text messages(SMS)extensively
and never had many problems except on Sunday mornings when they have done
system maintance on SMS or if my phone stopped taking messages. If the phone
stopped taking messages, power cycling the phone cures that.
