Are you sure you're not confusing the "Estimated ship date" with a 
release date? Yes, it says estimated ship date 12/10/2004, but that's 
because they are selling like crazy.

The other possibility is that you're thinking of the new 1855 blade 
servers, which aren't released yet, but then they don't have any PCI 
slots anyway :-)

I believe that is the stumbling block, yes. It's likely that even dual 
3.0GHz Nocona Xeons won't be able to bidirectionally transcode G.711 to 
G.729 for 96 channels in realtime (i.e. fast enough to do it without 
loss). All the previous performance reports on the list and the wiki 
were for much slower hardware, though, so I'd guess that it's worth a 
try; I just don't have the budget to try it myself <G>
