HI,
1. Make sure you are running asterisk with the command
asterisk
With no arguments.
2. Make sure you are booting to run level 3 so that X-windows isn't running.

Redhat 9 is running 100% cpu usage. I had a couple boxes doing this.
upgraded to Fedora and its ok.
