There's a new install guide for newbies that's much improved.  Even I 
was able to install AMP with the new instructions:
http://amp.voxbox.ca/docs/AMP_Installation_Guide_v1.0.1.pdf

Plus, they also have a mailing list, but there's not much activity on 
it.

They have their own forum as well.
