NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jesus H Christ on a Stick, NO!

Forums with no threading, no useful search, blasted animated emoticons and
needless graphics and cutesy little doo-dads are the bane of the Internet.
I wish that PHPBB style interfaces would drop off the face of the planet,
and that their inventors were drawn and quartered.

Wikis are bad enough; let's not dumb-ify the good technical discussion here
by trying to stuff it into some cutesy interface so Grandma isn't put off
by the sheer volume of text.

Every single attempt I've seen at unifying mailing lists and forums has
failed. You end up with all the tech gurus on the list and all the people
needing help on the forums. The gurus are happy because hardly anyone bugs
them, but the people who need help are put off because nobody beyond a mild
technical bent is helping them.

Please let's not even visit the idea of web-based forums. Blech. What a
nasty flavour!

Regards,
Andrew
