Ok try this

Login into console
Set verbose 15
Dial (extension of VoiceMailMain app)
Dial mailbox number
Dial password
Hangup

Does it still die?

See my example below

asterisk*CLI> dial 777
    -- Executing VoiceMailMain("OSS/dsp", "") in new stack
<< Console call has been answered >>
    -- Playing 'vm-login' (language 'en')
asterisk*CLI> dial 500
    -- Playing 'vm-password' (language 'en')
asterisk*CLI> dial 1234
    -- Playing 'vm-youhave' (language 'en')
    -- Playing 'digits/8' (language 'en')
    -- Playing 'vm-INBOX' (language 'en')
    -- Playing 'vm-messages' (language 'en')
    -- Playing 'vm-onefor' (language 'en')
    -- Playing 'vm-INBOX' (language 'en')
    -- Playing 'vm-messages' (language 'en')
asterisk*CLI> hangup
