SS7 is used to setup calls between switches in the PSTN - the so-called
trunk-side connection to a switch. PRI is a line-side connection to the PSTN.

TDMoE is for scaling * to multilpe boxes. IAX2 - similar? May be good for
distributing multiple *box across a wide geographic area? I did a quick read
on these protocols, but one thing is certain - they will not get you
connected to the PSTN. If you do not want to connect to the PSTN then SS7
should not be on your radar.
