[Asterisk-Users] Youch! Painfully loud beep...

I had to disable adsi (in addition to callwaiting - maybe my phones are
locked) as I still got a chirp logging into voicemail. Is there any reason
why this is so loud (i.e. is it a digital signal)? Can these messages be
transmitted at a less dangerous volume?

Try putting callwaitingcallerid=no in Zapata.conf as well, or even adsi=no.
