Tried that, and it doesn't make any difference.

I am getting the exact problem, btw, when I try to use TkPhone, a 
commercial softphone from thekompany.com.

Turning on debug shows the REGISTER request coming in to asterisk, and 
then asterisk responds with a 401 Unauthorized message.

And that's where it seems to stop.

Not sure what else I can do; my sense is that kphone must be broken, 
since the ATA186 here seems to register just fine.

Next step will be to watch what that ATA186 does and see what the deal 
is. . .
