That shows true belief in your product (and supplier of crystals!) I'll try
it both ways, but I guess that, lacking a tone generator, I won't notice the
difference..

Actually you probably want to supply the CAC with sync.

Slips generally only affect data and do not generally trigger any events.
The frequency of the slips will vary depending upon how far off the relative
clocks are of the two (not 1.544Mhz vs. 2.048Mhz, but their respective 8khz
divided clocks).  If you call out the E1 to a tone generator that generates,
say, 1571Hz signal (or some other odd ball
frequency) and you listen very very carefully, you may hear a slight tick in
the signal every so often when it slips.
