The AT command set on a modem is half duplex and unsuitable for
interactive work. Tie that to the multiple variations of how the AT
command set was implemented and what codecs where supported by each of
the modems and you have a pretty nasty mess.

The closest idea so far would be to try and get at the AMR style modems.
Hopefully since they all have the AC97 codec as part of the spec, you
only need to know how to get to the AC97 codec, and to use the phone
line signaling to make one work. 

So this is why everyone suggests the X100P, there just isn't a working
better option at the time.
