You can't run it on windows. *BSD is starting to be supported, but if
you don't feel like working through any code problems by being on a non
primary OS than stick with linux.

As for distro, do you know one already? If you do, stick with it. If not
look into the archives and you can see my rant on RH. If you are used to
FreeBSD, you should look at Debian.
