[Asterisk-Users] Data calls through *

I am still confused by this.  Though a standard POTS line my Pitney  
Bowes machine
can connect.  Through * it fails.  I have the 'd' option on the Dial  
Command.
Everything appears to be working fine.  I can hear the handshake of the  
modems.
