[Asterisk-Users] two computers set up ... now what???

This is a fairly common question. Perhaps Digium should plug that phone
jack up with something before shipping?

The "phone" jack is basically a passthru to the "line" jack.

Think of the X100P as a standard PC modem. The "line" jack is really the
only jack controllable by the PC.

Now you just need a "phone" or "station" (FXS) device and a method of
connecting it. Jon has outlined some good examples below...

Here's a basic diagram of where FXO and FXS devices come in:

[Phone (FXS device)] -> [Asterisk Box] -> [Telco (FXO)]

Asterisk can use a variety of Phone devices:

VoIP HardPhone (using SIP, H323, MGCP, or IAX)
VoIP Softphone (MSN Messenger, X-Lite, SJPhone, etc. Again, using SIP,
H323, MGCP or IAX)
Standard Analog Phone (connected with Digium S100U, TDM400P or
T100P/T400P+Channel Bank w/FXS ports)

Asterisk also uses a variety of FXO devices:

Standard Analog Interface (connected with Digium X100P, T100P/T400P to PRI,
or T100P/T400P+Channel Bank w/FXO ports)
VoIP Servers (IAXTEL, SIP-based services (FWD, Vonage), H323 Providers)

There are, of course, an infinite number of scenarios, but hopefully this
will clear things up for you.
