Or you can do something like
a) AS5400XM<---SIP--->Asterisk<---SS7(TDM)-->PSTN
b) AS5400XM<---PRI(TDM)--->Asterisk<---SS7(TDM)--->PSTN
I am not sure whether modem or fax over IP calls work in this fashion though.
