Steve is correct -- open-ended alphabet recognition is extremely hard. Think how hard it is for humans (how often do you have to say "B as in Boy" when spelling words over the phone?). Over telephones and radio the signal just doesn't contain enough information to reliably disambiguate between the very short words.

Much better if you can just build a grammar that has all of the names in it. Query your DB for all of the entries and build and load a grammar from the results. Even with thousands of names this is pretty effective and will be much more accurate than spelling. It's also more convenient for your caller.

Doing speech reco on letters is one of the most challenging tasks, its just to hard for the speech engine to recognize suddle differences in B,C,D .. etc. Ive had little success with this. The recognitions aren't accurate.
