It would require a java or flash based soft phone that would register to your asterisk box and make the call. And that would be too much overhead for such a feature and against the philosophies of the GUI.
Now as for a 'Dial Tone Detected' message, we might could work out something near that. I'll ask around for implementation ideas and get back with you if any look promising.

--
Ryan Brindley
Digium, Inc. | Software Developer
445 Jan Davis Drive NW - Huntsville, AL 35806 - USA
main: +1 256-428-6000 fax: +1 256-864-0464
Check us out at: http://digium.com & http://asterisk.org

----- Original Message -----
From: "Bob Crandell" <bob@assuredcomp.com>
To: "Asterisk GUI" <asterisk-gui@lists.digium.com>
Sent: Friday, February 13, 2009 11:35:28 AM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central
Subject: [asterisk-gui] Speaking of ToDO lists ...

Hi All,

How hard would it be to have a button say, on the hardware screen or
where ever it makes sense, that would check for a dial tone.
