I was thinking of posting a "grammar guide" of common mistakes I've seen
in the book for people to think about when writing. Besides its/it's,
I've seen a few like this:
Nicholas' dog (incorrect)
Nicholas's dog (correct)
I like apples, oranges and bananas. (incorrect)
I like apples, oranges, and bananas. (correct)
When a user enters the MeetMe, they will hear an announcement. (incorrect)
When a user enters the MeetMe, he will hear an announcement. (better or
"he or she will hear an announcement", but please don't mix pronoun forms)
When entering the MeetMe, the user will hear an announcement (bestest)
The yarn was spun by my Aunt Sally. (Bad, but correct)
Aunt Sally spun the yarn. (Good, in active voice).
I am lactose intolerant, therefore, I don't drink milk in the company of
others. (incorrect)
I am lactose intolerant; therefore, I don't drink milk in the company of
others. (correct... use ;s to join independent clauses)
If she'll buy me a ticket, I will go out to see her. (incorrect)
If she buys me a ticket, I will go out to see her. (good)
Thats enough to get everybody started on the road to better grammar. If
you have a minute, copies of Strunk's _Elements of Style_ can be found
on the Internet.
