I've just checked in all the information provided in this thread. 
What I ended up doing is changing the "Note" on Other Systems to a new
section titled "Non-Linux Platforms".  This section includes the notes
by Olle and Rich (including Steven's grammar correction).

I posted Jim's sections as is.
