I found the best way to get a handle on what's happening is to capture and
study the events on the Manager API, particularly when originating calls
via a Local channel.

I personally found the manager events very confusing. After reading through the code in asterisk, I finally realized that renames always happen in threes, that three renames are really just one MASQ event, and that all the information I needed was actually in the middle rename.
