It's been my experience that a large number of Asterisk users compile
almost everything from source because that's the way they've always done
things, partly because that's just the way that they like to do things, and
partly because that's the way they had to do it back when you couldn't get
Asterisk packages and the only way to get it was to compile it yourself.
