DEBUG_THREADS is horrible CPU-wise, but I am not really seeing any 
sizable impact from DONT_OPTIMIZE alone. An i5 4-core Xeon here under 64 
bit Linux, gcc 4.4.5, and quite an AEL script.

What would be your ballpark estimate of a performance impact of -O0?
